"Everyday" is the fourth single from Ariana Grande's third studio album, Dangerous Woman. It features American rapper Future. It peaked at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Background Edit

In an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, Ariana revealed the four collaborations that will be on her upcoming album. Her song with Future was among the songs she mentioned.[1] On April 10, 2016, the Dangerous Woman tracklist was updated on iTunes to show five explicit songs on the album.[2] On April 16, 2016, Ariana revealed the tracklist for her upcoming album, and "Everyday" was revealed to be one of the explicit tracks.[3]

On May 12, 2016, Ariana shared a snippet of "Everyday" on her Instagram.[4] On the same day, she shared three more snippets, along with the announcement that the song would premiere that night on Beats 1 Radio, and that after the radio show ended, the song would be available exclusively on Apple Music until the album releases. Shortly after it was released on Apple Music, she tweeted the lyrics "all I want, all I need, all I see is just me n youu". On December 20, 2016, Philadelphia's 96.5 AMP Radio host Mike Adam teased the alleged fourth single as the song "Everyday" on Twitter. On January 3, 2017, Ariana posted that Everyday will be the fourth single off of Dangerous Woman and will be serviced to Rhythm radio on Tuesday 10 & pop shortly after via Twitter.[5]

It was sent to US rhythmic contemporary radio and officially became the album's fourth single on January 10, 2017, and recently on US contemporary hit radio on February 14, 2017. A lyric video for the single was released on February 1, 2017 on her official Vevo channel, ArianaGrandeVevo. It shows Ariana in an oversized down jacket dancing and singing with a row of spotlights in the background. Since Future did not participate in the lyric video, Ariana dubbed his lines in the chorus and some in his rap verse.

Critical reception Edit

"Everyday" received mixed reviews from music critics. In a positive response, Joey Nolfi of Entertainment Weekly deemed the track a "rhythmic banger" and appreciated Grande's "smoldering vocals".[6] Michael Cragg of The Observer found the song pulsating. Jenna Romaine of Billboard magazine said it was a "fun, bopping song", while Taylor Weatherby from the same publication viewed it among Grande's strong collaborations, noting that it had "greatness". AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine described "Everyday" as "a heavy thrumming jam". Annie Zaleski of The A.V. Club called the track "a trap-pop gem" and an example of Grande sounding "far more confident tackling Dangerous Woman's diffuse genres." Brennan Carley from Spin magazine complimented the song's "neatly-measured hook". Complex magazine writer Chris Mench said, "With Grande going for a more mature sound on this album, 'Everyday' actually seems to fit the esthetic pretty well. It's dance beat and explicit lyrics seem ready to grab the attention of old fans as well as make an impact on the radio."

In a less enthusiastic review, Nathan Wisnicki from Pretty Much Amazing was critical of Grande's "lack of interesting inflection", but felt Future's feature saved an otherwise "pretty generic song". Quinn Moreland from Pitchfork Media dismissed Future's repetition of the song's hook, and also said that without the rapper's verse "it would be immediately obvious that 'Everyday' is constructed atop a pile of hot fluff." In a review of Dangerous Woman, Ross Scarano of Complex said "Everyday" and "Greedy" failed to match "the consistent highs" of Grande's 2014 album My Everything. Chris Kelly of Fact magazine wrote that the song wasted Future's feature. Rolling Stone's Christopher R. Weingarten derided the track as "something where Future sings a chorus that is one word", and cited it as an example of Grande being "prone to a schizophrenic sound and unfortunate sequencing". Theon Weber of Spin regarded the track as a "rote 2016 obligation" and "executive-mandated bagginess". Sputnikmusic viewed "Everyday" as "a real travesty", writing that "in addition to possessing awful lyrics, it is also simple to a fault."

Commercial performance Edit

"Everyday" debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 85 for the week dated March 4, 2017.[7] After five weeks on the chart, it peaked at number 55 for the week dated on April 1, 2017.[8] The song, however, ended Grande's streak of nine consecutive top-twenty hits,[9] and became her second-lowest charting album single, after "Right There".[10]

Live performances Edit

Grande first performed "Everyday" as part of her album showcase for Vevo in New York on May 21, 2016.[11] It was included on the setlist for Grande's 2017 Dangerous Woman Tour.[12] "Everyday" was also performed at the iHeartRadio Festival 2016.

Music video Edit

Filming of the music video started subsequently after the single's radio release on January 10, 2017. Ariana said in a Q&A that the everyday music video was her favorite video to have filmed in the Dangerous Woman era. On February 23, Ariana tweeted "Everyday Video Coming Soon", later. On February 25, Ariana tweeted again "Everyday Video Coming...." The music video was released on February 26. The video is directed by Chris Marrs Piliero, the same person who directed "Break Free" and "Popular Song".

The clip features Grande singing in the streets, in a laundromat and on the bus while couples of different races, ages and sexualites are kissing and beginning to have sex. Future raps his verse in an office surrounded by employees. The video received praise from critics for its showcase of the LGBT community and people of different races, one of Grande's main topics of activism. The music video was broadcast in its original form on MTV Live with a TV-PG rating.

That make me not quit, that good shit
He giving me that good shit
That make me not quit, that good shit

Oh, he give it to me
(Everyday, everyday, everyday)
He give it to me
(Everyday, everyday, everyday)
Oh, he give it to me

[Verse 3: Future]
I put that work on you everyday
When the night fall 'til the sun come
You done fell in love with a bad guy
I don't compromise my passion
It's not what you do for me, I'm doing the same for you
I don't be tripping or making mistakes
I made too many in my past (that's right)
I fight for the things you believe in
I got your body and put it on drive and
I got the keys and
We about to take us a vacation
I'm about to put all this vintage loving on you
Baby like it was the late 80s
When you ride on me, baby rotate it
