We wanted to have writing sessions and, like, jam together but we never found the time and we never found the right song," she said. "We were talking about a few other songs together but it just never worked out and it never was the right moment and then finally 'Right There' came along. And we were like 'Oh this is it'.

– Ariana Grande on the production of "Right There"

"Right There" is the third and final single and third track from Ariana Grande's debut album, Yours Truly. It features American rapper Big Sean. It was released as a single through Republic Records on August 15, 2013. The song peaked at #84 on the Billboard Hot 100 (see Chart Performances).

An interlude of the song was used during Grande's Honeymoon Tour before the third set and beginning of the full song. A condensed live version of the song is featured on K Bye For Now (SWT Live), which was released on December 23, 2019. Another live version of this song was featured on Yours Truly deluxe, which was released on August 25, 2023.

Background[]

Ariana has referred to "Right There" as "sort of a sequel" to her first hit single "The Way" due to the songs' similarities in melody and composition. The singer spoke of the mutual interest she and rapper Big Sean felt in wanting to collaborate but mentioned that it took some time for them to find the right song. She said, "We were talking about a few other songs together, but it just never worked out and it never was the right moment and then finally 'Right There' came along. And we were like 'Oh this is it'."

While the song was originally released as a promotional track available for immediate download with pre-orders of Yours Truly on iTunes, Grande stated in an interview that it evolved into a single on its own: "Right There" is kind of about to be the next single. I think we're going to do a video for it soon. It's just because of what's naturally happened with "Right There". Radio's just sort of started picking it up and fans seem to really be responding to that one."

Grande’s solo version of this song was posted onto Radio Disney’s website, with the same music video Grande posted on her YouTube Channel. Some small changes were made when Radio Disney posted the song onto their website. Big Sean’s rap was edited out, but it could still be heard briefly at the end of the song. The music video still has him credited as a feature despise him being edited out in the beginning and he was only seen and shown slightly towards the end of the music video that they posted. The music video also has the Radio Disney brand mark. Grande also has some extra vocals and adlibs that wasn’t sung in the original.[1]

Audios[]

Composition[]

Musically, the song consists of a 1990s R&B "throwback style sound", "stabbing synths", trap-inflected beat and a hip-hop groove. Backed by synths and finger snaps Grande introduces the song using a higher vocal register, a bass distorted voice appears singing while Grande harmonizes around.

Sean then half-rapped his verse, "OK, this, this, this for my number one girl who got the top spot title/ Spent an hour in the bathroom walked out looking like a model." Grande later appears singing: "Boy you make me feel lucky/ Finally the stars align/ Never has it been so easy, tell me you love/ And to give you this heart of mine." During the song, Grande sings about always being there for her love interest.

According to Lucas Villa from AXS, Sean agrees, reaffirming that he will be there for her too. However, some critics noted sexual suggestions in Sean's verses. Entertainment Weekly's Nick Catucci commented that the rapper "slyly acknowledges Grande’s chaste image in the song, crediting the ”missionary” position for his player status." And noted Grande's innocence "isn’t sacred, but the fact that she wears it as lightly as she does may be a small miracle."

Jason Lipshutz from Billboard noted: "While Big Sean boasts about his sexual prowess, Grande flaunts her typically impressive melismas before ratcheting up the emotion for the finale.

Release and reception[]

While the song was originally released as a promotional track available for immediate download with pre-orders of Yours Truly on iTunes, Grande stated in an interview that it evolved into a single on its own: "'Right There' is kind of about to be the next single. I think we're going to do a video for it soon. It's just because of what's naturally happened with 'Right There'. Radio's just sort of started picking it up and fans seem to really be responding to that one." Jenna Rubenstein of MTV wrote praised Grande's performance in the songwriting "her breezy vocals and twinkling melisma lay perfectly over the swirling track." “Right There” became a moderate success, peaking at #84 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was eventually certified Gold by the RIAA.

Music video[]

The music video for "Right There" was released on October 30, 2013. It shows Juliet (played by Ariana Grande) who finds Romeo (Patrick Schwarzenegger) at a masquerade ball. Also starring in the music video is Big Sean (who plays the priest). Notably, Elizabeth Gillies starred in this video. Grande's half-brother, Frankie briefly appears as well. Her dogs can also be seen in the video. The video was filmed in June 2013 at Grande's house at the time.

Live performances[]

The single version was performed at the 2014 Wango Tango, the White House Easter Egg Roll 2014 (which she performed with Big Sean), select showcases in Tokyo, Japan, to promote the release of her debut album Yours Truly in the country, as well as at the 2014 iHeartRadio Ultimate Pool Party.

Grande also performed the song as part of her headlining tour The Listening Sessions, during her opening concerts for Justin Bieber's Believe Tour, and the 2013 KIIS-FM Jingle Ball Tour. Grande performed the song in 2015 during The Honeymoon Tour as well.

For Yours Truly's 10th anniversary, Grande pre-recorded six songs from the album to sing live as a celebration. Right There was included.

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
(If you wanna party, if you, if you wanna party)
Then put your hands up (Then put your hands up)
(If you wanna party, if you, if you wanna party)
Then put your hands up (Then put your hands up)
You got it, you got it, baby, you got it, you got it, baby
You got it, you got it, baby, you got it, you got it, baby

[Verse 1: Big Sean]
Sean Don!
Okay, this, this, this for my number one girl who got the top spot title
Spent a hour in the bathroom walked out looking like a model
God! Doing what you do, got me right there with Apollo
On the moon, Who needs genies in a bottle girl if they already got you?

[Verse 2: Ariana Grande]
Boy you make me feel so lucky
Finally, the stars align
Never has it been so easy, to be in love
And to give you this heart of mine

[Pre-Chorus 1]
You know what I need, I know what you like
Put it all together baby, we could be alright
How could this be wrong when it feels so right?
Yeah, I really love you, I really love you oh
And I'll never let you go

[Chorus]
You should know, I'm never gonna change
I'm always gonna stay
You call for me, I'm right there (right there)
Right there (right there)
Cause you listen and you care
It's so different, no one compares
And if you never change, I'm gonna stay right there
I'll always be right there
You got it, you got it, baby,
You got it, you got it, baby,

[Verse 3]
And I get butterflies, just thinking
About your boy, you're on my mind
Sometimes I catch myself daydreaming
Lost in your eyes and I lose all track of time

[Pre-Chorus 2]
You know what I need, I know what you like
Put it all together baby, we could be alright
How could this be wrong when it feels so right
Yeah, I really need you, I really love you oh
And I'll never let you go

[Chorus]
You should know I'm never gonna change
I'm always gonna stay
You call for me, I'm right there (right there)
Right there (right there)
Cause you listen and you care
It's so different, no one compares
And if you never change, I'm gonna stay right there
I'll always be right there

[Verse 4: Big Sean]
(What, Okay, What)
Now if it all fell through would you catch me before the pavement?
If my Benz turned back to public transportation
Would you still be at home for me with the candles waiting?
And get my mind back adjacent to the place of a young visionary
A player too, you know I have some girls missionary
My black book of numbers thicker than the dictionary
And bible I got to recycle, I love and I like you
Five-course meals even though you don't mind a drive-thru
That's why I got you
And I'll never let you go

[Chorus: Ariana Grande]
You should know, I'm never gonna change
I'm always gonna stay
You call for me, I'm right there (right there)
Right there (right there)
Cause you listen and you care
It's so different, no one compares
And if you never change, I'm gonna stay right there
I'll always be right there

[Outro]
(If you wanna party, if you, if you wanna party)
You got it, I'll always be right there
(If you wanna party, if you, if you wanna party)
Then put your hands up (Then put your hands up)
I'll always be right there
You got it, You got it, baby, you got it, you got it, baby
You got it, You got it, baby, you got it, you got it, baby
You got it babe
